♦ Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System

HS Code stands for Harmonized System Code. It is a globally standardized numerical system used to classify traded products.
Developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO), the HS Code system is used by more than 200 countries and economies, covering over 98% of world trade.

Why is the HS Code Important ?

  • Ensures uniform classification of goods in international trade.

  • Determines customs duties, taxes (like VAT), import/export licenses, and restrictions.

  • Helps in collecting trade statistics and applying trade agreements.

  • Avoids confusion between different product names in different countries.

  • Incorrect codes may lead to delays, fines, or confiscation at customs.
